Firstly is the name. The Xbox, Xbox 360, PS 1-3 and the Wii were all names that have become second nature in the minds of everyone. This time around however, We got the Wii U, PS4 and Xbox One. The name Wii U, being just an addition on the original Wii is quite fine. Some people complain that the name is kiddy and corny but for me it just fits. Wii U represents that idea of the console exactly. Next on to the PS4. Sony has released that their fan base is loyal and they have the perfect branding of the PS name. To break this would be unnecessary. Microsoft.... what were you thinking? Xbox One? wait what? I literally wanted to puke the first time I heard the name. It not only was confusing but it is a stupid name. So what would they call the next Xbox after the Xbox One? the Xbox Two?...enough said.
Secondly we look at functionality. Because the Wii U has come out first we have more of an understanding and real world view of the console itself. We can basically see that the Wii u is designed for a specific type of gamer. I am not a fan of the new controller, but it is true that they couldn't just re-create an identical Wiimote and pass it off as something new. The innovation that made the original Wii cool is outdated and boring by today's standards. Overall, the Wii U would get a passing grade as a next generation console.
The PS4 with its stunning graphics and great title is expected to just be a continuation on Sony's line of gaming console success. The PS4 delivers what gamers want... that is a console that has games gamers want to play.
Now the Xbox One. So Microsoft has decided that what we gamers want to do are as follows; have a gaming console that we use mostly for video chatting with friends, making internet searches on our tv, using the console to watch live tv... basically do everything else except for actually playing games. Microsoft has designed an entertainment system that they are trying to pass off as a gaming console. There is still time between now and the final release to make changes but they hardly seem likely. The actual console design looks like they took an old VCR case and crammed new technology inside of it and called it the Xbox One. The design of the console and Kinect 2 are too boxy and outdated looking. The controller however, seems to be very well designed and the most interesting feature is the control of the triggers that the developers can set.
